getting out the WORD - the sunday of the passion PDF Print E-mail

the PRAYER...
Everlasting God, in your endless love for the human race you sent our Lord Jesus Christ to take on our nature and to suffer death on the cross. In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

the READING...
Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields.

Mark 11:1-11

the DEVOTION...
If it was up to Luke, he, simply, would have called it "Garment Sunday," because that's what the disciples spread on the road in front of Jesus, last Sunday. For Matthew and Mark, it might have been "Garment-and-Branches Sunday!" Only John talks about "branches of palm!" What does all that mean... if anything? I don't know! After all, it's not what's on the road that matters; it's the road itself! Especially where it leads...

This one takes us to Jerusalem! To the Temple! To the upper room! To Gethsemane! To the high priest! To the governor! To the purple cloak and the crown of thorns! It takes us through the streets, up the hill, to the cross! To the grave! And finally, to death itself! And it, really, doesn't matter if it was covered with garments or branches or palms! What's important is that the gate is narrow, the way hard, found by few. But this road alone is the way that leads to life!
