the PRAYER...
O Lord Christ, good shepherd of the sheep, you seek the lost and guide us into your fold. Feed us, and we shall be satisfied; heal us, and we shall be whole. Make us one with you, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

the READING...
[Jesus said:] "I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd."

John 10:11-18

I, recently, read that there's somewhere around 300,000 congregations in the U.S. At times, I think most of them are right here in Midland! Good old West Texas! We take our freedom of religion seriously! House churches of two or three! Mega-churches of thousands! And everything in between! Contemporary worship and traditional. Believer's baptism and babies. Denominational. Non-denominational. Pre-millennial. Post-millennial. A-millennial. We have 'em all! Hundreds of congregations. Dozens of denominations. Every day, we're adding more! And as god's people, we, still, have the audacity - or naïveté - to believe in ONE church! But how to get together? How to unite? Common causes? Shared interests? Middle ground?

Well, it just so happens, four hundred eighty-eight years ago, the reformers were asked that same question. Their answer: It's enough to agree about the gospel! The message itself - the Word himself - creates the oneness! Creates it! Nourishes it! Sustains it! In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us and for his sake, we're forgiven! By grace, for Christ's sake, through faith! One flock! One shepherd! But above all, one voice!
